What is a synchronous switching regulator?

Synchronous switching regulators incorporate both switches into the device, whereas synchronous controllers only provide switch drive signals. The switching elements in both cases are low RDS(ON), and high-power FETs.

Is a buck converter a switching regulator?

As DC-to-DC converters, switching converters have much higher power efficiency than linear regulators, which are simpler circuits that lower voltages by dissipating power as heat but do not step up output current.

What is the difference between synchronous and asynchronous buck converter?

The inductor current flows in only one direction in a nonsynchronous buck converter. The synchronous buck converter allows current to flow in both directions while dissipating power when reverse current flows.
